“Technology, smart audio and artificial intelligence is changing the user experience, and making it that easier for brands and consumers to connect. There will be more consolidation and more uncertainty. That’s part of the fun and challenge of this business of marketing.”

Upcoming Speaking Engagements

MAICON 2019 – Hello, Voice.

Welcome to the no-touch world. Forget typing. We can (and we will) control everything with our voice.

Over 250 million smart speakers will be in homes and businesses in the coming year. With these speakers ingratiated in our lives, close to 30% of users buy things with them.

These devices have close to an 85% approval rating from consumers. Right now, Amazon smart speakers (not including Google or Apple) already reach 15% of United States homes. This technology is scaling at a massive pace and the implication for your business is staggering.

Understanding voice is as important today as a website and strong search engine placement was 15 years ago (and still is). What is your brand voice? What is your voice strategy? Star Trek for some… a massive business opportunity for all.

Mitch Joel on AI Marketing

Automated creativity is inevitable (and a good idea)

In this Strategy Magazine column from spring 2017, Mitch Joel rails against the argument that AI cannot be creative. In this article he points out that artificial intelligence is already being used in creative endeavours including music composition, bots, writing weather reports and basic sports journalism.

From his perspective, AI can easily process innumerable quantities of artistic inputs, parse and remix them into infinite variations. With this many inputs, AI may even be better than humans at understanding and emoting than humans.

Open Letter To The Advertising Industry: Let’s Not Mess Up Ads For Voice

As voice navigation sees greater adoption, how will advertisers and marketers respond? His concern is that “the more voice that consumers use, the less screen time there will be… and that’s a fundamental shift in dealing with attention, interest, desire and action.”

Rightly so. Voice search doesn’t lead to the typical screen with a page of 10 organic results accompanied by a slew ads. Consumers using voice search expect to receive one correct answer, and not multiple possibilities.

What type of content should marketers create to help the customer experience in this new era? What tools and approaches can be used to create meaningful customer interactions in the world of voice search?
